VALUES EDUCATION

At the commencement of 2006, Gosford Public School implemented the “Values for Life” program developed by Karen Brunskill, a very talented and dedicated teacher from Victoria.

As suggested by the name, “Values for Life’, the 12 Values we have adopted as a school are values we hope the children will strive to develop for life. Values that we as teachers, have agreed are important and values we strive to model.

The Values for Life lessons are divided into 3 different age-appropriate levels. The junior level covers the years from Kinder to Year 2; middle level from Years 3 – 4; and senior level is for Years 5-6.

Each of the 12 Values are taught and focused on for a 2-week period.

The Values for Life program focus is on developing improved accountability in regard to Respect and Responsibility through:

  • Developing skills of Resilience
  • Enhancing Well-being in all areas
  • Encouraging children to make Wise Choices to promote positive consequences

The 12 Values implemented at Gosford Public School are:

  •  Consideration
  •  Friendliness
  •  Honesty
  •  Kindness
  •  Responsibility
  •  Tolerance
  •  Confidence
  •  Respect
  •   Courage
  •   Determination
  •   Caring
  •  Assertiveness

These twelve Values reflect both the nine Federal Government and the nine NSW Government values set for schools.

To support the Values Education program, numerous resources have been purchased that are being utilised in the classroom, the playground and the wider community.

A Values Education Forum was held in August, 2007. Guest speakers included:

  • Marie Andrews MP
  • Frank Potter – School Education Director
  • Merril Jackson – S.A.B.O.K program coordinator
  • Father Rod Bower – School Chaplain program

“The Voice” – Gosford Public School’s very first school song was unveiled by the Principal and performed by the K-2 choir.

To commemorate the success of the ongoing Values Education program, each family was issued with a magnet displaying the 12 School Values & 4 School Rules. Each year, incoming Kindergarten students & Opportunity Class pupils are issued with this magnet.
